In Bhusawal, Maharashtra, a remarkable architectural story unfolds — one that transcends form and function to become an emotive narrative of family, memory, and place. Designed by Humanscape Studio, Nostalgia is a twin-house residence born from remembrance, where old-world charm meets sustainable innovation.

The project’s emotional cornerstone is Doodhbaori, the client’s ancestral home near Charminar, Hyderabad — a haven filled with courtyard gatherings, open verandahs, and the informal luxury of a home without rigid definitions. Rather than replicating its form, Humanscape Studio chose to capture its essence — a way of living in union, with no fixed rules about where to eat, sleep, or congregate.

The 740 sq.m. home is arranged around an inward-facing courtyard that brings in light, wind, and life — creating a thermal buffer against Bhusawal’s 47°C summers. Local materials breathe authenticity into every wall: reclaimed stone from old railway quarters, salvaged wooden columns, lime-plastered finishes, and tactile limestone floors. Every choice is a deliberate nod to the past, reimagined for a present that values comfort, culture, and craft.

Architect Gaurav Chordia, founder of Humanscape, is known for his human-centered and emotionally resonant approach to design. The studio has built its reputation on crafting deeply personal, story-driven spaces that reflect both client identity and regional context. Nostalgia continues this philosophy — not just as a home, but as a living memoir.

Interior volumes are minimalist yet layered. The double-height living room, shaded verandahs, and sun-washed corridors offer both expansiveness and intimacy. Bedrooms include ‘jharoka’ windows for quiet reflection, while the kitchen breaks tradition by being open-plan, encouraging inclusivity and ease of use.

As the family began to inhabit the home, its spirit grew — plants were added, artefacts found their places, and travel mementos settled into niches. Every photograph over the years tells a story of how the house continues to evolve — not frozen in time, but alive with it.
