Tucked beside a river and shaded by mature trees, The Courtyard School is not just a place for education—it’s a living, breathing environment that evolves with its users. Designed by Manayan Architects, this sensitive and adaptive school campus brings together climate intelligence, local materials, and the deep-rooted wisdom of courtyard-centric planning.
It’s a place where children don’t just learn in the classroom—they learn from the architecture itself.

Design That Starts with Shade and Grows with Time
At the heart of the campus lies a large central courtyard—a multifunctional void that acts as an amphitheatre, prayer space, and gathering zone. Classrooms wrap around this core, creating a loop of engagement, interaction, and natural ventilation. The layout encourages movement, curiosity, and the kind of informal social learning that can’t be captured in textbooks.

To address the seasonal flooding from the nearby river, the entire structure is elevated on stilts, transforming the undercroft into a shaded, habitable ground plane finished with terrazzo flooring. This dynamic base is where play, pause, and daily exploration come alive.
Where Trees Shape the Campus
Rather than impose a rigid plan, the design allowed existing trees to lead the way. These natural anchors define smaller courtyards, outdoor playscapes, and moments of visual pause throughout the school. Custom-designed otlas, crafted railings, and breakout seating integrate seamlessly into the landscape, inviting children to sit, climb, rest, and observe.
Each classroom opens into its own threshold space—a modest bench or shaded corner that encourages pause before entering the next phase of the day. The result is a campus that breathes, both spatially and experientially.

A Philosophy of Process, Not Just Product
The school’s architecture reflects the founding ethos of Manayan Architects, a multidisciplinary practice known for its context-responsive and people-first design philosophy. Established in 1984, the firm has worked across scales—from residences and factories to urban infrastructure and educational institutions—with a consistent commitment to sustainability, minimalism, and the poetics of shelter.

Led by Harsh Desai, who brings academic and international design depth from CEPT Ahmedabad, ETH Zurich, and Building Beauty in Italy, Manayan Architects champions an approach that prioritizes process over form and growth over grand gestures. This is especially evident in The Courtyard School, where a flexible concrete grid allows for incremental expansion, echoing the organic way in which schools—and the communities around them—evolve.
The Courtyard School isn’t just an architectural achievement. It’s a thoughtful reminder that the best learning environments aren’t designed to impress—they’re designed to nurture.
