In the sacred city of Haridwar, a contemporary educational campus is rewriting how tradition and modernity can coexist in architecture. Patanjali Kanya Gurukulam isn’t just a school—it’s an environment of learning steeped in India’s spiritual legacy, yet built with the rigor and foresight of climate-responsive design.
Conceived as a senior secondary school for girls, the campus reimagines the ancient Gurukul system through an architectural lens that honors India’s cultural heritage while meeting the demands of modern education.

Where Spiritual Ethos Meets Educational Infrastructure
The masterplan was envisioned to go far beyond conventional schooling infrastructure. While the site includes classrooms, laboratories, a well-resourced library, and hostel accommodations, it also features culturally grounded elements like a Yagya Shala, open courtyards, and verdant spiritual zones for meditation and reflection.
Each structure has been crafted not just to house students, but to support a complete way of life—intellectual, physical, and spiritual. The layout promotes walking, quietude, and community engagement, reflecting a deep understanding of how space can shape learning.

Architecture Inspired by the Gupta Empire
Rooted in the elegant geometry and symbolism of Gupta-period architecture, the design incorporates temple-like silhouettes, ornate pillars, and carved archways. These features do more than evoke nostalgia—they serve to make the experience of learning feel sacred and grounded in identity.
Materials such as Dholpur sandstone and red Lakha stone were chosen for their cultural resonance, longevity, and ability to regulate thermal comfort. Combined with long shading eaves, verandas, and ventilated cavity walls, the buildings naturally stay cool—minimizing the need for mechanical systems and reducing environmental load.
From Ancient Ideas to Climate-Smart Realities
The project’s design process was driven by a synthesis of historical research and ecological intelligence. A detailed study of site topography, local climate, and solar orientation informed decisions about block placement, circulation, and facade treatment.
At the heart of the campus lies a multipurpose mess block, not just a dining space, but a spiritual and communal hub that supports yoga, meditation, and daily gathering. This central zone anchors the campus and reinforces the Gurukul principle of shared living and learning.

The Minds Behind the Vision
Led by Er. P. Maurya and Ar. Deepak Maurya, Accurate & Associates is committed to sustainable innovation, combining local expertise with global standards to create spaces that are efficient, resilient, and contextually grounded.

Principal architect Harsh Desai, a CEPT alumnus with further training at ETH Zurich and Building Beauty in Italy, brings a rare balance of academic depth and built experience to every project. His design sensibility emphasizes wholeness, humility, and the idea of shelter—a philosophy that resonates throughout the Patanjali Kanya Gurukulam campus.
This is not just architecture that shelters—it’s architecture that educates, uplifts, and endures.
