Inheritance by B&A Design Studio is a striking example of how architecture can revive heritage while responding to contemporary urban chaos. Situated in the heart of Lonavala’s bustling market street—right next to the railway station—the project transforms the 150-year-old Maganlal & Sons sweet shop into a timeless landmark that honors its past while embracing the future.
Celebrating Tradition Through Design
Established in 1880, Maganlal & Sons is one of Maharashtra’s most iconic names, known far beyond Lonavala for its legendary chikki. The client’s brief was rooted in legacy: to retain the soul of the original while giving it a bold architectural presence amid the visual noise of the town. B&A Design Studio, led by architect Rushi Baheti, took on this vision with sensitivity and strength.

The redesigned corner façade, opened up with stepped arches and layered with intricate brick detailing, immediately sets the building apart. Cast iron railings, traditional lamp posts, flower beds, and exposed brick patterns create a harmonious composition that reflects Maharashtrian culture and craftsmanship.
A Harmonious Blend of Function and Heritage
The design isn’t just about visual appeal—it’s deeply functional. The open L-shaped glass façade enhances street interaction while ensuring the retail area remains accessible and welcoming. The verandah acts as a transitional space, inviting visitors into a world that blends nostalgia with a curated retail experience.

Internally, every shelf, cabinet, and display element has been custom-crafted to meet practical needs. The interiors continue the exterior’s language—arched niches, patterned flooring, and grid elements mirror the exposed brick textures and reinforce a cohesive spatial identity.
The use of Shahabad tiles in the upper production areas adds to the robust, low-maintenance design approach, making the space practical for both staff and visitors. The preparation platforms and storage units have been designed after close collaboration with the store’s long-serving team, ensuring operations remain smooth and efficient.

Crafting a Timeless Presence in Lonavala
What makes Inheritance by B&A Design Studio so impactful is its ability to respectfully reinterpret history through architectural language. This isn’t just a store; it’s a cultural artifact—rooted in memory, built for longevity, and designed to inspire.
With a thoughtful palette of textures and details, this project reflects how heritage and modernity can coexist, creating a meaningful public space in one of Maharashtra’s busiest tourist hubs.
