Origin of Kala Ghoda Arts Festival.
History of Kala Ghoda in Mumbai dates back to 1999, the festival was set in motion to celebrate and preserve Mumbai’s artistic and cultural heritage. Named after the iconic black horse statue that once stood in the Kala Ghoda district, the festival is held in the heart of South Mumbai, transforming the area into a vibrant hub of artistic expression, known for its architectural beauty and creative history, Kala Ghoda provides the perfect backdrop for the festival’s diverse celebrations.
Fun Fact: The original statue of King Edward VII, created by philanthropist Albert Sassoon, was moved to Byculla Zoo in 1965. In 2017, the Kala Ghoda Association unveiled a new riderless black horse statue, designed by Alfaz Miller and sculpted by Shreehari Bhosle, bringing back the area’s iconic spirit!
