Designed by 7th HUE Architecture Collective, this adaptive reuse project transforms a 60-year-old ancestral bungalow into a serene library café, blending traditional Kerala architecture with the timeless appeal of literature and community.

A Library Café Rooted in Legacy

Originally part of the Pulkeezhe Variyath Tharavadu, the bungalow was constructed with materials salvaged from a grand ancestral home. For over four decades, it served as a central government post office—connecting people through letters, conversations, and time. Today, it connects them through books, coffee, and shared silence.

What sets this project apart is its emotional depth. Variyath is not just an architectural intervention; it’s a cultural rebirth. Led by the literary-minded vision of Ajayakumar and Raskhi Menon, and inspired by global icons like Shakespeare and Company in Paris, the library café invites readers and thinkers to reconnect with the past while creating space for new stories.

Adaptive Reuse Done Right

The transformation preserves the soul of the original structure. Elements like the traditional façade, courtyard openness, and regional materiality have been maintained and reinterpreted for modern use. Brick, timber, and lime-plastered surfaces come together with contemporary detailing to create an atmosphere that’s warm, tactile, and inherently Kerala.

Designed for both solitude and social connection, the spaces are zoned to accommodate reading corners, gathering areas, and café seating. Natural light plays a starring role, enhancing the textures and creating a soft, reflective mood throughout the day.
